Their synergy is at the heart of the brand, blending Reza’s deep-rooted heritage in rug craftsmanship with Wendy’s creative and modern approach to design. Together, they have built a brand driven by passion, creativity, and a shared vision for elevating rugs to a new artistic level.
Reza Ashtari: A Heritage Woven into Rugs
Born into a family deeply immersed in the art of carpet weaving, Reza’s fascination with rugs began at an early age. Watching his father work, he developed an admiration for the vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and symbolic stories woven into every piece. Under his father’s guidance, Reza grew up exploring rugs in a variety of settings, gaining an intimate understanding of the craft.
“I grew up surrounded by carpets. The vibrant colors and intricate designs sparked my curiosity from a young age, leading me to uncover the symbolism and stories behind each one,” says Reza. His passion evolved from mere fascination to a lifelong pursuit of excellence in the world of rugs.
Reza travels extensively, sourcing the finest rugs, Kilims, cushions, poufs, tent bands, and antique textiles from across the globe. His journeys take him through centuries-old bazaars, modern weaving ateliers, and even traditional nomadic tribes. “On some journeys, it feels as though time has stood still, while on others, I’m immersed in technological and artistic innovation. Each experience adds to the rich tapestry of Ashtari Carpets’ collection.”
Today, Reza is the strategic mind behind Ashtari Carpets, managing operations, financial planning, and sales while maintaining a personal connection with every aspect of the business. His expertise in all things rugs, from sourcing to selling, makes him the cornerstone of the company.
Wendy Guns: Creativity Meets Precision
Wendy Guns, co-owner and creative director of Ashtari Carpets, is a visionary designer whose background in graphic design brings precision, storytelling, and innovation to the world of rugs. As the second of three daughters in a multicultural family—her father Belgian and her mother of Chinese origin—Wendy grew up surrounded by the blending of two rich cultures. This duality is reflected in her work, which merges modern design with traditional craftsmanship.
“I transitioned from designing for communication to designing for craft. Reza’s passion became mine, and now we inspire each other in every way,” Wendy explains
After graduating in graphic design in Ghent, Wendy initially pursued a career in communication design. However, meeting Reza and witnessing his profound passion for rug weaving sparked a dramatic shift in her creative journey. Wendy found herself captivated by the artistry and meaning behind every thread and knot, eventually making the world of rugs her own.
