Ethnicraft and Ashtari Carpets have partnered for a groundbreaking collaboration: the creation of Ethnicraft’s very first Kilim rug collection, produced by Ashtari Carpets. This collaboration is built on a shared philosophy of craftsmanship, quality, elegance, uniqueness, warmth, and timeless design, resulting in a perfectly balanced and harmonious match.
Behind the Scenes: The Making of the Kilim Collection and How Ashtari Developed It from A to Z
At Ethnicraft, quality is the foundation of every product, carefully maintained throughout its entire lifecycle. Likewise, Ashtari Carpets specializes in crafting artisanal, handcrafted rugs and kilims that are both visually stunning and durable.
For this collaboration, Wendy Guns, creative director of Ashtari Carpets, designed 7 kilim rugs and two long-pile rugs exclusively for Ethnicraft. These designs combine style, simplicity, and craftsmanship with exceptional quality.
Each kilim rug is meticulously handwoven in Ashtari’s atelier in Pakistan by a family with over 150 years of expertise. The traditional hand-spinning process creates unique irregularities in the yarn, which ultimately carry through to the rug. This method imbues each piece with character and texture, resulting in a collection of rugs that embrace imperfection, celebrate artisanal skill, and exude warmth and authenticity. The thinner and thicker strands of wool absorb pigment differently, creating unpredictable color variations that make each kilim unique with its own story—no two are ever exactly the same.
The kilims are available in three sizes (170 x 240 cm, 200 x 300 cm, and 250 x 350 cm). Shades inspired by nomadic tones, such as gray, sandy beige, and terracotta, add a soft, harmonious touch to any interior. One standout design, "Black Dots," features a subtle pattern of irregular dots woven through the hand-spun yarn.
