Léon Stynen for Casino Kursaal Ostende

Léon Stynen for Casino Kursaal Ostende

We are incredibly honored to be the exclusive rug producers of the internationally renowned architect Léon Stynen’s rug designs for the next decade. A visionary Belgian architect, urban planner, and designer, Stynen’s legacy continues to shape modern architecture. His remarkable works, including the iconic Casino-Kursaal in Ostend, DeSingel in Antwerp, the BP Building, and the Crest Hotel (now Crowne Plaza), remain celebrated landmarks today.

Ashtari Carpets unveils a collection of six hand-knotted rugs inspired by Stynen's original Écossais motif, blending architectural precision with artisanal craftsmanship.

A Deep Dive into Stynen’s Design Legacy

Wendy Guns and Reza Ashtari of Ashtari Carpets embarked on an in-depth study of Stynen’s architectural and design work. Their research led them to the Casino-Kursaal, where they meticulously analyzed the architectural details and original patterns. Engaging in insightful discussions with Luc Vincent and Els Degryse, they extended their study to the Flanders Architecture Institute (VAI).

All the designs we present were exclusively created by Léon Stynen for Kursaal Oostende. Kursaal Oostende serves as the central theme that ties this collaboration together.

At VAI, Wendy Guns conducted a detailed examination of Stynen’s original drawings of the famous Écossais motif. Utilizing advanced graphic design software, she carefully reconstructed the pattern, ensuring precision and authenticity in every detail.

The color palette was thoughtfully refined into six fixed color variations, carefully balancing Stynen’s artistic intent with modern aesthetics. To bring these designs to life, Ashtari Carpets collaborated with master weavers in Nepal, developing samples to ensure the highest quality and craftsmanship.
